The Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) has been established with an objective of providing sophisticated characterization services to the researchers within and outside IIT Gandhinagar. The CIF houses several high-end state-of-the-art instruments. It aims to provide a central facility consisting of the latest and advanced analytical Instruments to facilitate multidisciplinary research and to cater to the needs of academic research institutes, universities, and industries for high-end material characterization.

Research in the Soft Matter Science and Engineering Group focuses on understanding properties of colloidal suspensions, liquid crystals, smart hydrogels, biomolecules, and a variety of other soft materials. The overarching goal of our research is to translate the soft matter research to engineering applications of complex fluids, functional surface films, and nano-bio materials. This facility includes Particle size analyzer, Modular Compact Rheometer, Optical Tensionmeter, Vane Shear apparatus, and UV Photoreactor.

Common Research & Technology Development Hub Laboratory

The Common Research and Technology Development Hub (CRTDH) sponsored by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar is a significant effort to reach out to industry partners in the area of Chemical Processes. The CRTDH at IIT Gandhinagar is developing customized technologies for the dye, textile, pharmaceutical, and other chemical industries. The CRTDH is trying to engage MSMEs and other chemical industries to enhance their capabilities in technology know-how on the effluent treatment, waste reduction, process synthesis, and process improvement, including R&D on product development. Also, CRTDH regularly conducts workshops and training sessions for industry people.

The laboratory is equipped with sophisticated instruments like Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)/ - Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) for elemental analysis, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzer for carbon content, Multi-mode Plate Reader for microbial studies, Fluorescence Spectrometer and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer for determining optical properties of products and raw materials, High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) for compound identification, Gas Chromatography for gas analysis and Spray Dryer for the liquid to solid processing in the powder form. The facility also has water quality testing facilities like Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Bound Nitrogen (TNb), and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). The CRTDH Lab and pilot plant facility are open to industry partners for testing and process development against nominal charges.

Colloidal and Crystal Engineering Laboratory

A state-of-the-art laboratory facility has been developed for the preparation and characterization of nanoparticles/microparticles to be used in pharmaceuticals and biomedical applications. The laboratory has a setup for nanoparticle production using a probe sonicator (Sonics VC 505), a particle size analyzer (Beckman Coulter LS 13320) for measurement of particle sizes in the range of 40nm-2mm and particle sizing systems (PSSS) zeta analyzer (NICOMP380 ZLS) for estimation of zeta potential of aqueous suspensions of nanoparticles. The particle size analyzer PSS NICOMP 380 ZLS can be used to estimate the sizes of particles in the range of 0.6nm - 10nm. A Martin Christ freeze dryer (Alpha 1-4 LD plus) is available for the preparation of dry powder samples from aqueous suspensions. A facility to produce aqueous suspensions of drug nanoparticles using subcritical CO2 (at 30-70 bar) is also available, which includes a 5-liter high-pressure vessel (operating conditions:200bar,and100oC).

A facility to produce and characterize aqueous suspensions of microbubbles is also available. These microbubble suspensions are emerging as a major tool for enhanced ultrasonic contrast imaging and drug delivery applications. The facility includes a setup for generating microbubbles, a particle size analyzer (PSS NICOMP Accusizer 780AD) for analysis of size distribution and concentration of microbubble suspensions, a swing bucket rotor centrifuge (Eppendorf 5804) to obtain microbubbles suspensions with a narrow size distribution through differential centrifugation and an optical microscope (NIKON TS 100F) for the characterization of the morphology of microbubbles.

DryProTech Laboratory

A research laboratory on particle engineering and powder processing (PEPP) has been set up to support research in the area of powder technology. The facility is similar to a typical formulation lab (solid dosage) used in the pharmaceutical industry. Several sophisticated instruments have been procured to characterize the particulate solids, bulk powders under different humidity conditions. The facility has the equipment to study various aspects of powder technology such as powder packing, mixing, fluidization, and flow through hopper.

The laboratory is currently equipped with a V-blender (Prism Pharma) and a cone-mill (Prism Pharma) for powder mixing and milling. Other sophisticated equipment such as powder rheometer (Freeman Technology) and laser diffraction particle size analyzer (CILAS) are available to characterize the bulk powder (shear test, bulk density, compressibility, aeration, etc.) and particle size determination. A digital automatic tap/bulk density apparatus (Veego) and angle-of-repose apparatus are there for tap density and angle-of-repose measurement. An environmental test chamber (HMG India) along with a hot-air oven is there for subjecting the powders to different humidity and temperature conditions. Different sizes of fluid bed and mixing devices have been fabricated to study the fluidizability, flow through hoppers, and mixing of fine powders.

The High-Performance Computing service at IIT Gandhinagar provides parallel computing resources to support research activity. It is a part of the System Administration Vertical within the Information Systems and Technology Facility.

The High Performance Computing (HPC) facility provides a serial and parallel computing facility in support of research activity within the IITGN community. It is part of the System Administration Vertical within Information Systems and Technology Facility. The service is comprised of the Vega HPC cluster, Aneesur HPC cluster and two high-end nodes known for the NVIDIA Teaching Center achieving to an overall performance of 120.8TF (approx)

The HPC lab houses high-end workstations for HPC software development, data preprocessing, output postprocessing and visualization tasks. The research activities span a broad gamut from the engineering disciplines to the physical sciences and humanities and include ab-initio quantum mechanical simulations of molecules and nanomaterials, modeling of heat and fluid flow in large scale structures, the study of fluid-fluid and fluid-solid interfaces, molecular simulations, high-energy physics and gravitational waves, electrodynamics of nanoscale structures, modeling novel polymers, bioinformatics, and public health.
