With 36+ years at GNFC, Mr. Shaikh shared valuable insights from leading major projects like Formic Acid, Acetic Acid, TDI, and Aniline plants, as well as driving ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 initiatives in technical services, safety, and environment.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar organized a two-day Training Module on “Basics of Process Safety Management” at Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) on 1–2 July 2025. Conducted by Prof. Chinmay Ghoroi and Sri. Vishwanathan G, the program featured engaging lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions. Key topics included hazardous and reactive chemicals, reactor safety, inherently safer design, relief sizing, fire and explosion risks, dust explosions, and process safety management guidelines such as OSHA 3133 and OISD. The module strengthened safety awareness and fostered valuable industry-academia collaboration among GACL employees.

Alpana Thorat, Ph.D. holds PhD in Chemical Engineering from IIT Gandhinagar (2016 Batch). She is the recipient of the “Outstanding Research Award” for her PhD Thesis work. After graduating with a PhD degree from IITGN, she worked as a postdoctoral scientist at Purdue University, University of Minnesota, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is currently working at Pfizer, Groton, Connecticut, USA, as Principal Scientist-Crystallization Process Development.

The event saw more than 100 enthusiastic attendees from all over India. A big thanks to all our speakers from UoMiami, IIT Gandhinagar, IISER Pune, PRL, and other industries for making this such an enriching experience for our participants. We hope to see many more iterations of the workshop in the future and look forward to fruitful collaborations among the speakers.
